WHAT IS IT?
What is the Donors 4 Life program?
Donors who give four times in a rolling 12 month period are called Donors 4 Life. The San Diego Blood Bank will honor these donors by displaying their names on digital video screens in each of the San Diego Blood Bank's 5 donor centers.
Why did you develop this new program?
We created the Donors 4 Life program to help donors realize how many lives can be saved with four donations in each rolling 12 month period. In order to meet the needs of area hospital patients, the San Diego Blood Bank must collect 400 pints of blood every day. Lives depend on it.
How does the Donors 4 Life program work?
There is no need to join the program. With your next donation, you automatically start your rolling 12 month timeframe.
We will continue to thank our donors with points that can be used on our online store. All previously accumulated points will also be available for continued use on the store.
Customer service questions about ordered items should be directed to email@example.com or 1-800-469-7322.
How do you earn points for the online store?
Different types of donations, receive different points.
- Whole blood donors receive 100 points for each donation.
- Platelet/Plasma donors receive 150 points for each donation.
- Double red-cell donors receive 200 points for each donation.
Why do double red-cell donors receive more points for each donation?
Since double red cell donors have to wait 16 weeks between each donation, they don’t have as many opportunities to donate as whole blood and other automated donors. As a result, double red cell donors receive 200 points at their first donation. They also receive 25 bonus points.
How do you earn Bonus Points?
In addition to earning points for each donation, donors also receive bonus points for giving two, three or four times for each rolling 12 month period.
- The second donation earns 25 Bonus Points.
- The third donation earns 50 Bonus Points.
- The fourth donation earns 75 Bonus Points.
- As long as you continue to keep making four donations on a rolling 12 month basis, you will continue to earn 75 bonus points with each donation
What about Plasma and Platelets donations?
Each successful plasma or platelet procedure will earn you 150 points for each donation.

Can I still keep track of my past donations?
Donors 4 Life can still track their total lifetime gallon levels in their account online at MYSDBB which is a link at the top of the sandiegobloodbank.org Home page. The number of gallons you’ve donated with the San Diego Blood Bank will be listed under the Gallon Tracker heading.
Can I still earn points even though I have been deferred?
If you are temporarily deferred, we do not award points until you return to complete the donation process.
Will I receive points if I’m deferred for low iron?
If you are temporarily deferred for low iron, we ask that you eat a good meal and return for another donation. After your successful donation, you will receive your donation points.
Will I receive points if I’m deferred after the collection process begins?
A donor will receive points for that donation if a needle was inserted in their arm…whether blood was drawn or not.
Can I transfer my points to someone else?
These points are one of the ways that we thank you for saving lives by donating blood. We appreciate that you might not wish to use them for yourself and if you don’t, you can donate them back to the blood bank, but you can’t transfer them to another person.
Do the points ever expire?
The points expire after 24 months of inactivity as a blood donor.
Can I donate points back?
Yes. You may donate your points back to San Diego Blood Bank. You may select the Donate Points Back option on the online store, or you may call us at 1-800-4MY-SDBB (1-800-469-7322). What does the cholesterol level that you provide represent?
We provide your non-fasting total blood cholesterol count in your Wellness Profile. For adults, the National Cholesterol Education Program recommends the following classification for fasting total blood cholesterol count: less than 200 is Desirable, 200 to 239 is borderline and greater than or equal to 240 is considered high.
If your value is greater than 200, your doctor may want to repeat this test in his office as a fasting test or perform other tests to measure individual types of cholesterol such as LDL and HDL.
Additional information for the public concerning total cholesterol levels is available from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the following website: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/other/chdblack/empower1.htm.
