The San Diego Blood Bank celebrated the Grand Opening of its new headquarters June 22, with a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting. Mayor Jerry Sanders, Supervisor Greg Cox, Rolf Benirschke and Board President Elaine Hanson, M.D., all spoke briefly during the event which was followed by tours of the new facility. Carol LeBeau emceed the event.

The building, which is located at 3636 Gateway Center Ave., (near I-15 and Market St.) San Diego 92102, has the space and configuration needed today and the flexibility to change and expand as blood services and technology evolve over the next several decades.

The blood bank urgently needed a state-of-the-art headquarters to more efficiently manage the present andto be prepared for the future of life-sustaining blood and tissue donations from and for our community

“With advancing technology, blood, its components and its stem cells have become a critical life-saving factor needed by one of every eight hospital patients. Walker added. “From donation to transfusion, these vital tissues must be analyzed, processed, safeguarded and transported to ensure their effectiveness.  For these reasons, the quest to find the right facility to take our blood and tissue expertise into the future has been challenging.”

A major gifts and brick and tile campaign is planned by the blood bank to fund the difference between the sale of the current headquarters building and the cost of purchasing a new facility.
