The San Diego Blood Bank and Univision Radio stations La Nueva 106.5 and Recuerdo 102.9 FM are teaming up to hold a Blood and Bone Marrow Drive, along with a fiesta featuring Mexican food and dance troupes from the House of Puerto Rico, on Saturday, August 15, from 11 am to 4 pm, at the Show Palace, 1527 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, 92058.
Bloodmobiles will be parked in the lot adjacent to the Show Palace along with the Be The Match marrow registry where potential donors can join the National Bone Marrow registry free of charge.
The first 100 blood donors will be awarded a pair of UltraStar movie tickets. In addition, donors will enjoy free food provided by Alejandro’s Taco Shop from 12 pm to 1 pm, and they will be entertained by two dance troupes, Reinitas Borincanas and Jovenes Boricuas, from the House of Puerto Rico from 1 pm to 2 pm. On-air personalities from the radio stations will be broadcasting from the drive, and will have their popular “Spin 2 Win” wheel to award station prizes.
Appointments can be made for the drive or donors can walk-in during the hours of 11 am to 4 pm – everyone is welcome to donate.
Everyday thousands of patients are searching for a life saving marrow donor. Patients have the greatest chance of finding a match within their own ethnic background. Currently Hispanics only make up 9% of the 7 million members of the Be The Match registry.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in generally good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may qualify to donate blood. To join the NMDP registry, potential donors must be 18-60 and in good health, be willing to donate to any patient in need, meet the health guidelines, and provide photo I.D.
