Blood Donations Help Patients Like... Maya

Maya, a 14-year-old teenager with an unforgettable laugh, has been battling aplastic anemia most of her young life.

She was diagnosed in 1997 and given a blood transfusion almost immediately. Aplastic anemia causes a person's bone marrow to function incorrectly, making it hard to fight infection.

Along with medication, Maya receives blood transfusions to stay healthy and will most likely continue that regimen throughout her life. Now, able to go 4 to 5 weeks between transfusions, Maya enjoys playing the drums and bass guitar and likes to skateboard.
